Your child’s backpack should weigh no more than 5-10 percent of his or her body weight.  Anything heavier than this will make the child lean forward to support the weight on his or her back.  The weight of the backpack should be supported by the straps on the shoulders.  Also, the backpack should never hang more than 4 inches below your child’s waist.

Follow theses simple rules and your child will not be in danger of developing back pain due to improper backpack use.
