The worst way to sleep is on your belly. When you do, especially on a soft mattress, your lumbar spine (low back) is forced into excessive extension and can damage the joint surfaces of your spine. In addition, your neck is turned to the right or left much more than it should be for an extended period of time. Ideally, you should sleep on your back and use a pillow. If you are a side-sleeper, place a pillow between your legs so your knees do not touch. This will reduce the stress on your hip that is not touching the bed.
