One of the most common ways to injure your back is through improper lifting technique. Proper lifting technique is actually quite simple. The difficult part is not taking a shortcut. Here are the key elements when lifting something: 1) keep the weight as close to your body as possible at all times, 2) bend your knees, not your back! and 3) do not twist or turn while in the action of standing up while holding the weight. Keep these simple steps in mind when lifting anything and you will significantly reduce the likelihood of hurting your back.
