Proprioception is our body’s sense of self-movement, force, and body position.  It’s mediated by special nerves known as proprioceptors.  These specialized neurons are located in the muscles, tendons, and joints.  Proprioceptive feedback is present in every muscle movement made.  Without proprioception, we wouldn’t be able to move without thinking about our next step.
Our proprioceptors are often damaged when we injure our musculoskeletal system.  Damage to the proprioceptors can lead to balance and coordination issues.  This is why post-injury rehab, which includes balance training in addition to flexibility and strength gains is so important.  Without the proper physical rehabilitation, your susceptibility to further injury increases significantly.
